Since LoL was to going to become a free to play game, it suffered from a significant issue. How exactly can they fund this game if they were to make it into a four-year, five-year heck a lifetime project of theirs? They can't put any price tags to it for playing the game through subscription fees like in the case of WoW or even make the game a pay to keep. Remember, this is ten years ago when we didn’t have too many free to play games in the market.
As such, they were forced to follow up on how another significant free to play game operated at the time DOTA by Valve. So, they made the game free to play, but in return added in cosmetics, which the player could choose to pay for to unlock or would get it for doing specific tasks. For example, today, if you were to refer a friend to LoL, you would get the Grey Warwick Skin.
Cosmetics like skins, ward skins, icons, etc. are just as its implied a cosmetic way of redesigning your experience in-game without affecting the gameplay itself. They can mainly be seen in-game and on the client itself. These skins often cost real-world money, but they can be obtained for free through the gameplay itself. Riot themselves often use most of the profits from skins but whenever there’s a special event going on with a new branch of skins, know that the players are often on the edge of their seats waiting to watch how they can experience the story themselves.
