Com325-001:Implementation of Video Games

Social Skills

The implementation of social features, which modern video games have, in literary fiction can provide social benefits. Social features in video games refers to online multiplayer or local multiplayer modes within a game. These modes allow for users to message, voice chat, and use their virtual characters to interact with other players in the game. For instance, one study proposes that gamers are quickly learning social skills and prosocial behavior that might generalize to their peer and family relations outside the gaming environment (Gentile & Gentile; Gentile et al.). Furthermore, another study found that players seem to obtain crucial prosocial skills when they play games that are specifically designed to reward effective cooperation, support, and helping behaviors (Ewoldsen et al. 10). In relation, both pieces of research have shown that the modes of interactions such as multiplayer, allow for cooperation which then develop social skills and prosocial skills.

In this project, one method of improving social skills for users is using a multiplayer game(Minecraft Classic) and a social communication application called Discord. Minecraft Classic will be used so users can invite other users to their world, this will enhance their story experience because they can cooperate with others to fulfill the tasks in the story. Additionally, Discord will be used for the purposes of communications, meaning that players can create a group chat to invite their friends which in return will allow for messaging and voice chatting.
