Com325-001:Implementation of Video Games

Problem Solving Skills

If literary fiction is structured and designed similarly to that of video games, literary fiction can also improve problem solving skills. It is important to note that not all genres of video games will improve problem solving skills equally. One research found video games promote reasoning and problem-solving abilities through the use of different characters and levels, which encourages gamers to stop and think about the right strategy to achieve the goal(Gee 9). Similarly, another study found that strategy and puzzle games had the greatest success in increasing problem solving skills:

Strategy games require different approaches or strategies to beat the odds and learn from the failure, which practices gamer’s problem-solving skills during the video game process. In addition, puzzle games help to improve students' logical thinking and analytical thinking, which indirectly improve one's problem-solving skills as puzzle games emphasis on solving the puzzle.”(Chen 37)

As stated by both research papers, the findings have shown that when video games are structured in terms of strategic play and solving puzzles, users will see improvements in their overall problem solving skills.

There are a variety of elements that contribute to the creation of strategy and puzzle video games. In addition, some of these already exist in literary fiction, but just need to be used alongside video games. According to the article “Criteria for Strategy Game Design” by Fabian Fischer,  some key elements that make up strategy games are the decisions, replayability and themes/narratives. If literary fiction can incorporate strategic video games, alongside their story, then literary fiction will improve problem solving skills. In this section of the project, a story will be provided to the user and then they will be able to enter the world of Minecraft Classic after reading so. This will provide a basis of how literary fiction should be structured. The user should get a story and then they should be prompted to enter the stories respective game world.
